How Christopher Nolan Made Oppenheimer Without CGI?

Updated: Jul 11, 2023

Oppenheimer is coming out on 21st July and we just have to wait a little longer to see Christopher Nolan's magic on the screen until then here are some facts and behind the scenes from Oppenheimer.

Welcome to Weekly Articles and Today, it's Oppenheimer.

The film is going to have color as well as some black-and-white scenes. It's for the first time that a movie is shot with IMAX cameras in black and white. According to Christopher Nolan, the black and white and color scenes in Oppenheimer are two different timelines.

This decision was taken by Christopher Nolan while keeping the public/subjective and personal/objective timelines in mind and these two timelines in the movie are going to represent the film with black and white and color.

The color scenes will show Oppenheimer's subjective experience (personal) whereas black and white is more of an objective (public) experience of the story from the perspective of another character. This has more to do with the history we are told about the explosion through media.

Not to worry there are only a few black and white scenes in the film and the color occupies the major portion.

Some theories have predicted that the black-and-white scenes are going to be present post the explosion of the atomic bomb indicating the loss of life in correlation with the loss of color. Therefore, making the world colorless post-explosion.

The early reviews of the film show people leaving the theatre absolutely devastated. They can't speak. Christopher Nolan recently showed the film to a filmmaker and he described the film as a horror film.

We have seen Nolan film's endings being ambiguous and cliffhangers (i.e. Inception and Interstellar). Christopher Nolan says that Oppenheimer and Inception have very similar emotionally complex endings. Here's what Nolan exactly said

“I mean, the end of Inception, it’s exactly that. There is a nihilistic view of that ending, right? But also, he’s moved on and is with his kids. The ambiguity is not an emotional ambiguity. It’s an intellectual one for the audience. It’s funny, I think there is an interesting relationship between the endings of Inception and Oppenheimer to be explored. Oppenheimer’s got a complicated ending. Complicated feelings.”

Christopher Nolan actually shot the explosion of a bomb without the usage of CGI also there are no CGI shots in Oppenheimer. He has also promised that the viewers will almost physically be able to feel the nuclear detonation.

Christopher Nolan managed to do this because of his repetitive perseverance in achieving the desired results with the help of practical effects. Thanks to his pratical supervisor who was one of the first person Nolan shared the script with after completing.

The advance booking for Oppenheimer has begun and make sure you get your tickets as soon as possible. Somehow manage to watch this film on IMAX though the prices are high. I recommend you to watch it on IMAX, it's once in a lifetime experience.

Here, are the teaser and trailer for the film. Check it out and I'll see you next Thursday.
